Which of These Design Philosophies Work for You?

In November’s “Style Session” community call, I shared some examples of major design philosophies that have been applied across multiple disciplines (such as product design, graphic design, architecture, interior design, etc). This isn’t an exhaustive list… just wanted to get you thinking about which (if any!) of these is helpful or relatable to you.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHIES

  1. Function Over Form: this is the premise that beauty doesn’t matter if the thing doesn’t work.

  2. Empathy & Focus: this one puts people at the center of design (rather than products, things or systems).

  3. Aiming for “WOW”: this means that good design is one that’s powerful or impactful.

  4. Design As Cultural Artifact: this means that design is born of and reflects whatever cultural forces surround it.

  5. Great Design Is Pleasing: simply stating that designing for the sake of pleasure is a worthy pursuit.

  6. Good Design Is As Little Design As Possible: the premise that you shouldn’t see the hand of the designer in the finished product or project.

I explained each of them in more detail during the call if you’re interested in learning more!

I also did a Show & Tell from my recent travels, sharing what caught my eye, design wise. And everyone talked a b it about their holiday plans, including decor.
