Lacquerware Workshop Tour
As you may know, I’ve just returned from a trip to Cambodia and Vietnam and I have lots of design inspiration to share! I start with a tour of the workshop where exquisite, handmade lacquerware products are produced in Siem Reap. (For you geography buffs, Siem Reap is the 3rd largest city in Cambodia and the gateway to the famous temples, including the much photographed Angkor Wat).
Below you’ll find the full recording of this month’s Style Session (our monthly live call). We had an interesting discussion about the tension between creating beautifully made, expensive home objects and the living conditions of the people who make them. It came up during my show & tell of the lacquerware workshop I toured while in Cambodia, and we’ve barely scratched the surface on the topic.
But first you’ll see a stand-alone video of the workshop tour. I decided to re-do the slide show I put together for our live call because, honestly, I was kinda wingin’ it. I’d only been home for a couple of days and was still adjusting to the time change. Admittedly, I wasn’t at my best during our call! So if you want to, you can just watch the re-done slide show, below, and skip through the slide show portion of the replay. You may want to just just listen in on the discussion afterwards.
I hope this makes sense!
I’ve also included photos of one of the pieces of lacquerware I bought… a sculpture of a native fish in the Mekong River.
And that’s not all!
In our facebook group, Karyn shared photos of one of her projects that is really stunning. She’d recently been on a trip to Italy and took a gorgeous photo. She wanted to hang it in the bathroom but was worried about it holding up in a wet environment. So she came up with the idea to have the photo transferred onto metal! It looks amazing and I wanted to be sure you saw it.

Reminder: you can skip over the slide slow portion of the call if you’d like. The one I’ve re-done, above, is better :-)
