Translating a Topic of Interest into a Vignette
The purpose of this tutorial is to take a topic of interest and translate it into a vignette.
For example, choose a favorite movie that has a distinct visual style (Gone With The Wind, a movie musical, any film by Wes Anderson…) and find some things around your home that, to you, evoke that style.
You can also choose to get your inspiration from a novel, a period of history (the Roaring 20s, the Swingin’ Seventies… you get the picture), or even a particular style found in interior design.
That’s what I’ve done for the example in the video.
I’ve chosen to create a vignette that highlights the style of Chinoiserie, even though I don’t already own a lot of that kind of thing! In the lesson, I talk about:
height
shape
visual weight, etc.
As with most of our vignettes, these are the compositional elements you’re learning through the practice of creating them. Use those to apply to your own vignette and share it with the group when you’re done :-)
