KEY TAKEAWAYS

Today, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Trevor Fulmer, a Boston-based interior designer launching a new line of eco-friendly, handmade rugs. It was a discussion that moved beyond aesthetics to the core of what matters in our living spaces and the impact of our choices on the environment.

Trevor shared his journey from a 13-year career in advertising and marketing to launching his own interior design business in 2019. Advertising and marketing into interior design has been driven by a passion for creating memorable experiences. His approach to design is about breaking traditional rules to create dynamic spaces, and his venture into product design with custom rugs.

Trevor's foray into designing eco-friendly rugs with his Foundations collection, developed in partnership with Landry & Arcari, uses only natural materials like wool and silk. Trevor ensures that his rugs not only exude quality and durability but also leave a minimal environmental footprint, and traditional hand-knotting techniques, reflecting Trevor’s dedication to quality and sustainability. The handcrafted nature of Trevor's rugs highlights the skill and dedication of artisans who meticulously spin the wool and tie each knot by hand. This personal touch not only results in durable and unique pieces but also supports local industries abroad. Trevor's emphasis on collaboration, mentorship, and kindness within the design community reflects a spirit of camaraderie and mutual growth.

Our conversation explored the importance of integrating personal stories and antiques into modern design, underscoring the notion that great design is not just about how spaces look but how they feel and the stories they tell. Throughout our conversation, Trevor and I resonated on the idea that design is more than just styling a space—it's about curating a narrative that reflects the individual's past, present, and future. By incorporating elements with personal stories, mixing old with new, and creating spaces that evolve and surprise, we can craft interiors that not only look beautiful but also feel authentic and engaging.

Trevor and I spoke about current design trends and seeing many sculptural designs in interiors. We also spoke about the advancements in technology with lighting. Lighting can be rope. Lighting can be on the floor. Of course, it's in the ceiling. It's on the walls. What you can do with lighting now is incredible lighting really does create an ambiance.

We ended our conversation by speaking about collaboration, mutual respect and simply being kind. “I think there's so much talent and there's so much knowledge out there. Why not share it? Why not, why not surround yourself with people who are motivated and creative and strong and passionate, like that's only going to make you better.”
